Fremd-Conant will resume Saturday

The only thing the Fremd and Conant defenses couldn't stop Friday night was the lightning.

Mother Nature won out, at least for the evening.

The Fremd-Conant game Friday was first delayed and then quickly postponed due to the heavy lightning. The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday with Fremd leading 7-3 at the half.

It was the defensive game that was expected from both teams.

It has been a run-first game for both teams. Conant attempted just one pass in the first half and Fremd 7 passing attempts.

The teams scored their points thanks to turnovers.

Conant scored first when the Cougars' Derek Lewandowski recovered a fumble at the Fremd 4-yard line.

The Fremd defense, led by Luke Bilek, Nick Rattin, Will Josten, Sam Carver and Jason Haas, then came up big for the Vikings. They turned the Cougars away on 3 consecutive running plays, forcing them back a yard. Jessica Smeltzer drilled a 22-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter to make it 3-0.

Fremd was able to pull ahead 7-3 after the Vikings' Jacob Schmagin recovered a fumbled punt at the Conant 14.

The Vikings moved the ball down to the 2 on an 11-yard catch by Bilek from Ryan Saxe. Bilek powers over for a touchdown on the next play and Anthony Piasecki added the conversion with 8:07 left in the first half.

After a pair of punts, Conant ran out the clock.

With teams in the locker room, Fremd's dance team had just completed its routine and turned it over to the band for the Vikings' homecoming festivities. The lightning detector then sent them and the crowd for cover.

After consulting inside the school, the game officials along with those from Conant and Fremd agreed to suspend the game until Saturday morning.
