Big plays, big result for Lisle

Lisle is having fun this football season. Big plays added to the fun Friday night.

The Lions ran their record to 8-0 with a 41-8 thrashing of visiting Sandwich, likely earning a home game in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks.

"It's a great feeling," Lions fullback/defensive end Mike Walker said. "I love Lisle. I love it."

The Lions' first big play came on their first play from scrimmage. Demetrius Kellie took a Jay McGrath screen pass, turned the corner and ran 82 yards for a touchdown.

"I saw my players Dylan (Laue) and Jakub (Kowal) blocking and I saw the hole," Kellie said. "Coach (Paul Parpet Sr.) told us before the game the ball was going to be a big screen. Just hit the numbers and sideline and that's what I did."

The next big play came on defense on the 14th play of a Sandwich drive. Facing a fourth-and-12 at the Lions' 15-yard line, Sandwich opted to throw, and Demetrius King Jr. intercepted the ball at the 8. His return went the distance for a 14-0 Lisle lead less than eight minutes into the game.

"It was very important," King said of the early lead. "We wanted to come out and set an example."

Nick Martich made it 21-0 when he caught McGrath's second TD pass of the game, an 11-yard reception on the third play of the second quarter.

Walker got the scoring going in the third quarter, deciding four plays was a long enough drive, ending it with a 35-yard TD run.

"It was incredible," Walker said. "Great block by my lineman Charlie Waldusky. He did a really nice job."

Lisle grinded out its next touchdown for a change of pace, with A.J. Casmer capping a 10-play, 38-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run with 8:45 to go in the fourth.

Meanwhile, the Lisle defense hadn't given up a Sandwich first down to that point in the second half against the Indians' Wing-T run-based offense.

"We locked them down for most of the game," Laue said. "It was a big factor to help boost our offense because the enthusiasm the defense gave us helped our offense to spark."

Sandwich (3-5) ended the Lions' shutout bid with 4:01 to play on a 1-yard run by Devin Carrera. Laue scored the final touchdown with 2:17 left, breaking through the line on a third-and-10 call for a 55-yard run.

Lisle can complete a perfect regular season next week at Coal City (7-1).

"A win next week will be a great way to enter the playoffs," Laue said. "We expect to be playing late in November, and getting that 9 and 0 will help us spark that playoff run that we need and we will get."
