Glenbard East tops Fenton in UEC

Rushing more than 60 yards for a touchdown makes a solid and exciting play, but Glenbard East secured Friday's Upstate Eight Conference football game with a second 60-yard touchdown.

Glenbard East celebrated a 21-12 win in Bensenville.

Fenton started the game off strong with a touchdown in the first quarter. But the Rams started their comeback in the second, scoring seven points within the first four minutes.

Rams sophomore quarterback Connor Cerkas ran 64 yards, bringing the team back in the game. Fenton (2-2, 2-2) still played strong into the third quarter, with senior running back Andre Bess rushing about 5 yards each time he had possession.

After numerous complete passes from junior quarterback Nickolas Benn in the second quarter, Fenton came back strong in the third.

But the Rams continued to rush the field with a second touchdown of over 60 yards. Senior cornerback Deon Cook said his success came with training.

"We've been practicing that play, but I wasn't expecting us to run it," Cook said. "But when we did, I just knew I had to score."

Glenbard East (4-0, 4-0) proved rushing the field to be their forte, especially in the second half. Senior running back Christopher Whitehead was another crucial player in the game. Whitehead completed 8 of 13 passes and rushed over 30 yards.

But in the fourth quarter, a 44-yard pass to senior wide receiver Diamon King led to a touchdown. Bess scored after a second down, bringing the game to 14-6. The Bison's perseverance showed when senior wide receiver rushed over 50 yards, bringing the team to another first down.

With the Rams incomplete passes and two fumbles in the fourth, Fenton gained some momentum. Several penalties brought Glenbard East back a bit, with about 55 yards in penalties over the course of the game.

Although the Bison persevered, the Rams heightened their lead with a touchdown quickly after Fenton's.

Rams coach John Walters was proud of the win but said there is room for improvement.

"We made some mistakes tonight and wish it would've been a little bit better for us," Walters said. "But at the end of the day we ended up finding a way to win."
