DuPage County week two football roundup

Wheaton Academy and York were among the winners in DuPage County on the second weekend of the 2022 high school football season.

Here's a look at some of the week one highlights.

Wheaton Academy 63, Christ the King 0:

Wheaton Academy notched a shutout Friday in a matchup that was over early against an upstart Christ the King program. Senior quarterback Belay Brummel played a half of football and managed to go 6 for 7 for just over 100 yards and 2 TDs. The tandem effort of running backs sophomore Stephen Fellowes and senior Gavin Pedone tallied two TDs each. The Warriors entered halftime up 47-0.

An experienced crew of sophomores made an impression on defense for Wheaton Academy. Fellowes added to his offensive exploits with an interception on defense while sophomores Brandon Kiebles and Jeremy Johanik led the team in tackles.

Senior kicker Declan Finnegan, who is also the starting goalie on Wheaton Academy's reigning state champion soccer team, put the ball into the end zone for touchbacks five times on kickoffs. The Warriors (2-0) host Aurora Central Catholic (0-2) next Friday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Wheaton Academy's Performance Trust Field.

York 58, Morton 7:

Offensively York scored on every offensive possession while rushing for 326 yards and throwing for 97 yards. The Dukes fefense was stout for a second straight week, only allowing 37 total yards. Morton's lone touchdown came off a kickoff return.

Matt Vezza completed 5 of 9 passes for 85 Yards and 1 TD, and also ran 3 times for 44 yards and another score. Jake Melion gained 118 yards with 2 TD on just 9 carries.

Also running well for the Dukes were Kelly Watson (7-52 yards, 2 TD) and Adam Fennell (11-65 yards, 2 TD).

Anthony Mancini had 2 receptions for 32 yards and 1 TD for York.

Lyons Twp. 45, Addison Trail 0:

The Blazers fell behind 31-0 at the half and never really got going against a solid Lions team Friday night.

Gio Long was 11 for 18 for 51 yards through the air, while Demarius Allen, who rushed for 135 yards in the opener, was limited to 26 yards on 12 carries by the Lyons defense. Juan Lucas recorded an interception for the Blazers.
