Klett re-elected as IHSA Board president

Illinois High School Association board president Dan Klett, the principal of Wauconda High School, was re-elected for the position at the organization’s regularly-scheduled meeting on Oct. 16.

“I am appreciative of the opportunity to continue serving as the president of the IHSA board of directors,” said Klett in the IHSA news release. “I have the pleasure of working with a group of dedicated professionals on the Board and in the IHSA office. I am proud to represent this organization and humbled by the support of my colleagues on the Board.”

Klett is the 34th individual to serve as the Association’s Board President since its formation in 1903.

“We are very lucky to have a board of directors made up of individuals that are committed to the best interests of our member schools and students,” said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. “Our Board members volunteer their time and resources to serve our schools, where they deal with difficult and diverse issues. We feel privileged to work alongside them.”

Women’s cross country

Southern Illinois sophomore Kelley Gallagher (Mundelein) led the way for the Salukis at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational. She placed 82nd after clocking in at 21:18.72.

The SIU women finished 27th out of 49 teams and posted two runners within the top 100 out of 340 runners in their first 6K race of the season.

Women’s soccer

Concordia University (Chicago) sophomore Ahissa Bustos (Wauconda) was named the school’s female ‘Athlete of the Week’.

Bustos scored in three consecutive games last week in recording her first points of the season.

Included in her output were the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win at Lakeland College and the game-tying goal in a 1-1 draw with Marian University.

She also scored a goal and assisted on another in the Cougars’ 14-0 rout of Robert Morris University — Lake County.

Kessel Heat

The Kessel Heat will begin action Nov. 11 at the Libertyville Sports Complex and run until Feb. 23.

There are no tryout dates. Evaluations will take place the first two weeks of practice: Nov. 11 and 12 and Nov. 18 and 19.

Kyle Kessel, Dennis Kessel, Christopher Pickens, Brian Burns and other additional coaches will run all practices and games. There will be no parent coaches.

No cuts will be made and there will be no more than 10 players on a team, allowing for plenty of playing time. Each grade level has a top team with the remaining teams being evenly dispersed. Carmel girls feeder

The Carmel Lady Junior Corsairs feeder basketball prorgam will hold tryouts for the 2013-14 season for girls grades 6-8 on Sunday October 20 at Carmel Catholic High School, Mundelein. Tryout times: 6th graders 12:00-1:30, 7th graders 1:30- 3:00, 8th 1:45-3:15. Players must plan to attend Carmel Catholic High School.

Fees to be determined. Fees will cover uniforms, league, gym, tournament, and referees. Practice begins in November and games start in December. The season will go through March.

Girls compete n the NIGFBA against other high school feeder teams.

Jr. Lady Blue Devils

Tryouts for the Jr. Lady Blue Devils feeder basketball team are open to any girl currently in grades fifth through eighth who reside in the Warren Township High School District No. 121. The tryouts are Oct. 22 and 23 at the Hunt Club Park Community Center from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Football

Dartmouth College safety Steve Dazzo (Prospect) was featured in the the Valley News, the local newspaper which covers the upper regions of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Dazzo has Type 1 diabetes and carefully monitors his blood sugar during games. He is one of the team’s top defensive players with 13 tackles and 1 interception.

Ÿ Augustana freshman Jack Asquini (Buffalo Grove) helped the Vikings to a 28-17 victory over Elmhurst at Lindberg Stadium in Rock Island.

Asquini found out mid-week that he would fill in for Division-III all-American Erik Westerberg, who was out with concussion-like symptoms.

Asquini came through with 10 total tackles — 6 of them solos — and recorded his first collegiate interception.

He had played in two nonconference games this season and came into the weekend with 2 solo tackles — one of them a tackle-for-loss — in his career.

Ÿ MIT’s Justin Wallace (Fremd) had 21 carries for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 48-0 win over Nichols College. He also had 32 carries for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns in MIT’s 28-26 season-opening win at Pomona Pitzer in California.

Women’s tennis

Augustana freshmen Lauren Goggin and her sister Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove) were named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference team.

Lauren was selected to the first team with a fall season debut record of 13-4 in singles and 13-4 in doubles. She also received the honor of CCIW “Newcomer of the Year” while playing mainly in the number two spot. She placed second in No. 2 singles. She was 5-1 in conference play.

Twin sister Dana received second team all-conference honors, putting together a 9-4 record in singles’ play as well as 11-4 in doubles’ competition. She was 4-1 in CCIW play while competing primarily in the No. 3 spot. She was the runner-up at No. 3 singles.

Lauren and Dana finished with a doubles’ team record of 11-4 and went 5-0 in league competition, placing second at No. 1 doubles.
