Grayslake Central beats Round Lake for 1st win

Maybe it's a double-duo combination that led the way for Grayslake Central in picking up its first win of the season.

Nick Paul ran for 209 yards and had four rushing touchdowns while throwing for another 105 yards and freshman Maurice Edwards in his first start, rushed for 190 yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground.

Grayslake Central ran away with a homecoming victory over visiting Round Lake 41-6 in a Northern Lake County Conference game on Friday night.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group off young men," Grayslake Central coach Jason Schaal said. "We talked about that we had to be focused. We thought that we've been playing well the last couple of weeks. We were able to put it all together here tonight. We had some big plays and were able to get into the end zone. I told them I wanted them to enjoy homecoming and that's what it's all about."

The Rams (1-4, 1-2) had a pretty good effort running the ball in the area of 400 yards against the Panthers (1-4, 0-3)

"Our offensive line played outstanding tonight," Schaal added. "I know that we had a pretty good number of rushing yards and it's to the those guys up front. The front five made it happen and moved the Round Lake D-line and giving us some pretty good holes to run through."

Edwards scored twice in the opening quarter with runs of 11 and 31 yard on their first two possessions for a 14-0 Rams lead.

Then Paul went in from five yards out that increased the lead to 21-0 with 8:32 left in the second quarter.

Another Paul TD on the ground with 5:41 remaining in the third increased the score to 28-0.

"We knew coming in that we had to hit our holes," Paul said. "Our running game opened our passing game. I was so happy with our run execution. The offensive stepped up. They knew they struggled over the last couple of weeks. But they knew they were on a mission here tonight."

Edwards capped of his debut-night with two more scores from 23 and 25 yards for his four-touchdowns.

Round Lake's Brandon Kisiel scampered into the end zone on a 24-yard run.

"You practice all week and have a game plan," Round Lake coach Cristo Garza said. "You come out and get down early, when you're a young team like us your just not prepared to overcome the 21-0, big plays or turnover deficits."
