Maine West holds halftime lead on Deerfield

It was Homecoming Friday night for the Maine West Warriors and they came out of the gate ready to play.

Senior quarterback Danny Kentgen sparked the Warriors' offense early, throwing for 2 touchdowns and passing for 91 yards in the first half as the Warriors took a 26-0 lead heading into the locker room.

"We definitely scouted them (Deerfield) heavily this week," says Kentgen. "We really came into this game focused after a great week of practice and came in confident."

Kentgen had some assistance in igniting the offense, as senior Zack Norman, one of the "three-headed monsters" in the backfield for the Warriors, emerged with 51 rushing yards on 8 carries in the first half including a 4-yard rushing touchdown to cap off a 12-play, 58-yard scoring drive. Then after a 30-minute weather delay, on the next Deerfield possession, Norman came up with a huge 53-yard pick-6 to give the Warriors a 19-0 lead.

"Our team didn't play great last week. I mean the scoreboard looked good, but as a team, we didn't play great so our coaches really pushed us this week and our players have responded," Kentgen said.

Minutes later, after Kentgen connected with Jacob Riedl for a 15-yard touchdown reception to put the Warriors up 26-0, Deerfield was preparing for one more offensive possession before the half and that's when the weather took a turn for the worse. After about an hour of waiting in limbo, the game was officially postponed and will resume Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with the Warriors leading 26-0.

"We can only control what we can control, which is what we talked about going into the game too, can't do anything about the weather," said Maine West coach Jason Kradman. "Our mindset was however long it takes to finish the game we will finish the game. We are excited about tomorrow, but at the same time, we understand that both teams are getting a fresh start."
