Oswego pulls away from West Aurora in 1st meeting

On a historic prep football night for the neighboring communities of Oswego and Aurora, Logan Mont did all he could.

The West Aurora senior had a 70-yard scoring reception, a 48-yard kickoff return, threw an 11-yard pass, converted three extra points and punted six times.

But Oswego has captured eight consecutive league championships for a reason.

In the schools' first meeting on the gridiron, Oswego broke free from a halftime deadlock with four unanswered scores to defeat the Blackhawks 40-21 before an overflow crowd in Aurora Friday night.

Oswego improved to 6-0, 2-0 in the Southwest Prairie West; the Blackhawks fell to 2-4, 0-2 in their new conference.

Mont electrified the Blackhawks' homecoming crowd with a 58-yard kickoff to begin the game.

Trevon Tittle plunged home from a yard out moments later as Mont also had his first extra point for a 7-0 West Aurora lead.

"(The kick) came in high, found the gap and found my blocks," Mont said.

But Oswego would not allow the Blackhawks any offensive consistency for almost the remainder of the first half.

The Panthers had a pair of scores to take a 14-7 lead, only for West Aurora quarterback Will Tammaru to find a streaking Mont for a 70-yard catch and run down the left sideline.

"We saw that they were pressing us and thought we could get outside," Mont said. ""Will threw a great ball, and I just happened to catch it."

"Logan, he does a lot for us," said Tammaru, who connected with Mont six times for 140 yards as part of his 210-yard passing night. "We're very thankful to have him. He is really good and important to us."

Savion Little was able to preserve the 14-14 tie for West Aurora heading into the intermission with an interception as the second quarter wound down.

Cameron Van Fleet had a first-quarter fumble recovery for the Blackhawks in an equally perilous spot for the home-team defense.

"I was not a happy coach at halftime," Oswego coach Brian Cooney said of the Panthers' two giveaways in the red zone. "We had some foolish turnovers."

It was all Oswego after the break, however.

Oswego quarterback Cole Pradel finished 14-for-21 in the passing game for 232 yards while also rushing the ball for 43 more yards.

Jack Lemke scored twice for Oswego, but it was Nikolas Hampton who delivered the TKO for the Panthers with a 52-yard scoring reception and 60-yard interception return.

Tammaru connected with Bohdi Thomas on a 16-yard fourth-quarter consolation touchdown for West Aurora.

"We were just trying to give (Mont) as many touches as possible," West Aurora coach Nate Eimer said. "He's our best athlete."
