Lack of execution costs Libertyville in loss to Lake Forest

Three football teams in the North Suburban Conference entered Thursday's Week 3 games undefeated.

Warren cruised to a 55-0 win over Waukegan to keep its record spotless.

Lake Forest's route to a 3-0 mark was a bit tougher.

Libertyville put up a fight before falling 23-14 to the Scouts and suffering its first loss of the season.

Interestingly, in this shortened season, Warren and Lake Forest are not scheduled to play each other.

"I said before the game that we were going to have to be physical against Lake Forest and we were going to have to be very good on the details," Libertyville coach Mike Jones said. "We were not good on the details.

"It wasn't like we were turning the ball over a bunch. We just weren't executing what we wanted to execute. We were one block away from a run. We were filling the wrong gaps on defense, little things like that that made it easier for Lake Forest to complete a pass or make a play. Against a good team, you can't afford to do that."

At halftime, Lake Forest held a slight 9-8 edge. The Scouts went up 16-8 in the third quarter and Libertyville answered to cut its deficit to 16-14. And then Lake Forest scored once more to close out the win.

Both of Libertyville's touchdowns were scored by junior Connor Dickson, both on throws by quarterback Blake Ellingson.

Dickson caught a total of 5 passes for 58 yards.

Ellingson completed 11-of-21 passes for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns.

"The first touchdown Blake threw, he was really under a lot of pressure," Jones said. "And he delivered a strike. He came to the sidelines and I told him, 'That was a big-boy throw.'"

Cruise control:

Heading into a Week 4 showdown on Friday against fellow unbeaten Antioch, Wauconda is hitting on all cylinders.

The 3-0 Bulldogs cruised to a breezy 40-6 victory over North Chicago on Thursday in which a running clock was activated for the second half.

"We started with a touchdown right away," Wauconda coach Dave Mills said. "And then everything kind of went our way."

Wauconda scored on the opening kickoff when junior Vince Bennett returned the kick 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs scored twice more in the first quarter, on a 2-yard run by JJ Jacobo and a 1-yard run by quarterback Nick Bulgarelli.

The offense kept rolling in the second quarter, as the defense continued to keep North Chicago off the scoreboard.

Bennett scored again on an 11-yard run, and Bulgarelli passed for 2 touchdowns, a 33-yarder to sophomore Clayton Glasby and a 49-yarder to Javerius McGuinn, who had also blocked a punt in the second quarter.

Bulgarelli wound up completing 12-of-16 passes for 183 yards. He scored a total of 3 touchdowns.

"We were getting great field position all night," Mills said. "Almost everything we were getting was short yardage. Like it has all year, our defense also played lights out and gave us a lot of great opportunities."

Extra, extra:

It took some extra time. But Grayslake Central certainly didn't mind.

The Rams got their first win of the season on Thursday by turning back Round Lake 42-40 in overtime.

"We made some plays early but we allowed them to get back into it," Grayslake Central coach Mike Maloney said of Round Lake. "We had to compete at the end to win and our kids responded."

After a back-and-forth game, the final horn sounded with the score tied.

Grayslake Central scored in overtime when Luca Maravola ran in a 3-yard touchdown. The Rams went for 2-points and converted on a pass from quarterback Darryl Overstreet to tight end Kurt Heerdegen.

Round Lake responded by scoring in overtime on a touchdown pass from quarterback Cristian Castro to Michael Randell.

But the Panthers were unable to make good on the conversion.

"We are so happy for our seniors to get this win," said Maloney, whose team improved to 1-2. "We went from not having a season at all to getting a win like this. It's very special."

The Rams set two school records in the game.

Overstreet completed 20 passes for a school-record 275 yards, which broke a record he set earlier this season against Antioch. He also tossed 4 touchdown passes.

Three of those touchdown passes from Overstreet went to Colin O'Malley, who finished with 13 catches for a school-record 200 yards.
