Glenbard South takes care of business, spreads the wealth
Two weeks into the football season and Glenbard South is right where it wanted to be.
The Raiders moved to 2-0 both overall and in the Upstate Eight Conference with a convincing 56-0 victory Friday night against West Chicago in Glen Ellyn. The Raiders play at conference heavyweight South Elgin (2-0, 2-0) next week in a game that could decide the league championship. Any concern the Raiders would be caught looking ahead went by the wayside early.
"No, not worried," said senior left guard Brandon Lim, a three-year starter. "I trust my teammates to do their job, they trust me to do my job. We're all good."
The Raiders wasted no time jumping in front. West Chicago punted to end its first possession, but senior running back Trevor Burnett returned it 46 yards for a touchdown.
When the offense did finally get the ball, the Raiders held it just three plays. Senior receiver Dominic D'Ambra took a screen pass 70 yards for a touchdown.
After a West Chicago fumble gave the Raiders the football at the Wildcats' 10-yard line, sophomore quarterback Michael Champagne hit sophomore wideout Cam Williams on a slant for a touchdown on the first play of the drive.
Burnett, a Division I recruit, finished with just six carries for 27 yards, including a 1-yard rushing TD. Champagne added two more TD passes, one to D'Ambra and one to Williams, to finish 5-for-5 passing for 160 yards and 4 TDs.
"I think this offense is scary. Knowing Trevor, the player that he is, But we also have other weapons too. It's nice to spread the ball around and show that other guys can get their job done as well," said senior wide receiver Zach Blazek, who spelled Burnett on punt return duty and turned in a 50-yard TD return late in the first half.
Junior running back Jalen Brown added a touchdown to end the third quarter, the final score of the game.
The Wildcats fell to 0-2, 0-2.
"Mason Wright had a couple of nice plays," West Chicago coach Tyler Belding said. "He's one of our best players. We've got to find a way to get him the ball more. The offense ran the ball all right at times in the first half, but penalties and things like that killed the drive so we couldn't score."
