Glenbrook South cruises past Conant

If one could call the playing field a 100-yard office, the Glenbrook South football team took on the role of efficiency experts Friday against visiting Conant.

The Titans were extremely efficient in all three phases of the game against the Cougars, and it added up to a 41-21 victory in Glenview.

The Glenbrook South offense scored 4 rushing touchdowns, 1 TD through the air with a bit of trickery, and one more on a blocked punt scoop and score.

And on defense, the Titans, for the most part, were bend-but-don't break.

Conant had more than a few long drives in the contest, but was hurt by turnovers and some ill-timed penalties, especially in the first half

"I thought that our defense played great," said Glenbrook South coach David Schoenwetter. "Conant's offense is really difficult to prepare for. They've got some great players on their offense and their quarterback (Giuseppe Dugo) does a terrific job. But even when they got some plays on us, our guys just reloaded for the next play and started fresh right there."

The Titans built a 21-0 lead after two quarters of play on touchdown runs from Matt Burda (60 yards) and Will Collins (10 yards), and a halfback option scoring pass from Collins to James Sherman.

"There's key factors that win and lose football games," said Cougars coach Bryan Stortz. "Penalties is one of them and turnovers is one of them. You turn the ball over and your chances of winning significantly decrease. We can't have turnovers and untimely penalties - we've just got to execute better."

The Titans increased the lead with 3 more second-half touchdowns.

Junior Hank Leahy had the blocked point and run in for a score, Burda added a 4 yard rushing TD, and senior Etor Agbenya, who recorded an interception on defense in the first half, ran one in from 19 yards away.

"Etor is playing both ways, part of the time on offense and all of the time on defense," said Schoenwetter. "He's a physical kid and on offense he's a big load for the other team to tackle."

Conant fought back in the final two quarters to score 3 touchdowns on the ground, one by Dugo from 9 yards out and 2 from Ryan Kutella, the second one a beautiful, twisting, turning 84-yard scamper as he turned on the jets late and outran the Titans' defense.

Kutella finished with 126 yards rushing for Conant.

Burda (107 yards) and Collins (105 yards) led the way for the Glenbrook South ground game.

"We've had our whole offensive line come back," said Schoenwetter of the Titans' strong start to the year.

"And our defensive line as well. Those two units have been fantastic and so have the skill kids, but we've been confident on the line on both sides of the ball."
