Prospect offense explodes against Wheeling

Wheeling's Homecoming game against Prospect Friday night featured a halftime fireworks display.

But, it was the Knights who provided the fireworks on the field in their 50-6 romp over the Wildcats in the Mid-Suburban East contest.

Prospect scored on all four of its first half possessions. The defense chipped in with a touchdown on a blocked punt in the first quarter.

By halftime the Knights (5-1, 2-0) led Wheeling (1-5, 0-2) 36-0.

"We had a tough game against Buffalo Grove (17-14 win) last week. We executed well on defense," said senior Knights linebacker Jacob Grzesiak. "It taught us how tough this team could really be. We stuck together really well. We have to play good defense if we want to make a run at this thing. We need to trust our reads on the defensive side."

Prospect scored on its first possession in the third quarter to force a running clock for the rest of the game.

"I thought our offense did very well tonight," said Prospect coach Dan DeBoeuf. "We scored on all but one possession. We still need to fix a few things but overall we played well."

The Knights' defense smothered the Wildcats in the first half in holding Wheeling to minus 31 yards of offense with three quarterback sacks.

"Our defense is playing really well right now," said DeBoeuf. "They are at a high level right now. We're really leaning on them. We're excited by the way we're playing right now."

For the game Wheeling would manage just 29 yards of offense. Most of the gains came on the Wildcats' last drive of the game when Diego Giles scored on a 5-yard run.

"We were focused on them," said Prospect senior safety John Svoboda. "We had some early penalties so we have to be able to clean those up. It was a good game because almost everyone was able to get into the game. We call it 'Everybody Eats.' "

Owen Walter started the scoring for the Knights with a 2-yard pass from quarterback Frank Covey and a 7-0 lead.

Moments later Aiden Walter recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and a 15-0 lead.

Junior running back Jacob Parisi then scored three straight touchdown for the Knights.

Parise caught a 9-yard pass from Covey and then scored on runs of 3 and 6 yards in helping the Knights to their 36-0 halftime advantage.

Sean Koniezcka caught a 6-yard pass from Bradley Vierneisel at the start of the third quarter.

Rocco Falls accepted a 9-yard pass from Matthew Guza to finish the Prospect scoring.

Prospect finished with 227 yards of offense. Parisi led Prospect with 51 yards on 6 carries. Matthew Raitano had 46 yards in 9 trips. Three different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes.
