Titans, Ramblers win big

Glenbrook South scored 35 straight points including Tommy MacPherson touchdowns passing and rushing in a 42-14 nonconference win at Fremd on Sept. 9.

Tied 7-7 after one quarter, the Titans (3-0) scored 5 unanswered touchdowns to take a 42-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Hunter Kreske needed only to complete 2 passes in the game - but they both went for long touchdowns to the same player. A 70-yard touchdown pass to Chuck Gottfred opened the scoring, and a 58-yard pass to Gottfred gave Glenbrook South a 28-7 halftime lead.

Gottfred also scored on a 1-yard run and ran for 39 yards. Fullback Hank Leahy led the Titans with 101 yards rushing.

A special teams highlight gave the Titans a 21-7 lead. Luke Marino recovered the football in the end zone for a touchdown after a high snap over the Fremd punter's head.

MacPherson broke the game wide open when he threw a 15-yard halfback pass to receiver Griffin Dahiya for a touchdown, then scored on a 50-yard run for the 42-7 margin. MacPherson finished with 97 yards rushing and also 5 tackles on defense, second on the Titans to Jonathan Dumars with 6.

At 7 tonight in John Davis Stadium, Glenbrook South hosts a second straight Mid-Suburban West conference foe, Palatine, which also comes in 3-0.

Loyola 34, St. Rita 14

The No. 1 team in Class 8A likewise remained unbeaten entering this Saturday's CCL/ESCC Blue matchup against Brother Rice, 1:30 p.m. at Hoerster Field.

The Ramblers led St. Rita 34-0 on the strength of 5 touchdown passes by senior quarterback Jake Stearney, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 172 yards before he turned the Loyola offense over to Luke Collins.

Helping Loyola amass 358 yards of offense to St. Rita's 123, Stearney got his team on the board with a 3-yard pass to tight end Jack Parker. He followed with another short pass to running back Will Nimesheim, and made the score 21-0 after one quarter on an 18-yard touchdown strike to Spencer Leadbetter.

Leadbetter added a 3-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter before Loyola polished off its scoring early in the fourth on an 18-yard Declan Forde touchdown catch from Stearney.

Showing its overall offensive depth, Quinn Foley led the Ramblers in receiving with 6 receptions for 83 yards while Nimesheim ran for a team-high 65 yards. Drew MacPherson added 52 yards rushing and Peter Hogan ran for 46 yards.

Through three games Stearney has completed 36 of 46 passing attempts for 539 yards, 10 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

On the season the Ramblers' defense features six players who have made at least 10 tackles, led by junior linebacker Colin Scheid with 14.
