Prep Bowl quarterfinal: Scouting St. Ignatius at Marmion

Prep Bowl Playoffs

St. Ignatius (8-2) at

Marmion (6-5)

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday at Mooseheart

Last week: Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 45, Marmion 14; St. Ignatius 10, De La Salle 7

Outlook: The Cadets were ousted from the IHSA playoffs with last week's loss to Sacred Heart-Griffin, but the season continues in the Prep Bowl quarterfinals. This game was moved to the synthetic surface at Mooseheart since Marmion's Fichtel Field "was pretty chewed up" after Saturday's game against SH-G, coach Dan Thorpe said. Marmion's defense has to mind its assignments against the Wolfpack triple-option offense. St. Ignatius quarterback Quinn Donath is an athletic ball carrier who likes to share the all with speedy junior Campbell Callam and junior fullback Giorgio Arquilla. The Wolfpack did not manage a touchdown against Cary-Grove's first-team defense in a 42-14 Class 6A first-round playoff loss on Oct. 27. Marmion senior quarterback Brandon McPherson has rushed for 283 yards and 10 touchdowns and has completed 109 of 208 passes for 1,711 yards and 17 touchdowns with 8 interceptions. His leading receivers are senior Zach Urwiler (39 rec., 672 yards, 6 TD), junior Peter Ferraro (26-514-5) and senior Jacob Molenhouse (24-286-2). "What a great opportunity to play in such a prestigious football tournament," Thorpe said. "We weren't allowed to play in it until this year, so when we got the opportunity we jumped on it. Plus, our sophomores have been up with us for three weeks now so it's been a great experience for them."

Advancement: The winner plays at Fenwick (7-4) next Friday in the Catholic League Championship. The winner of that game faces the winner of the Chicago Public League Championship in the Prep Bowl at Soldier Field the day after Thanksgiving.
