New Trier turns back Fremd

Fremd was on a mission to pick up its first win of the season and traveled to Northfield to take on New Trier in a Central Suburban/Mid-Suburban crossover game.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, they fell to New Trier 27-21.

"We figured out a way to lose again," said Fremd coach Lou Sponsel. "I feel that we have been the better team in all three games but we are not making big plays when we need to.

"You saw how their kids made plays in key situations. We need to learn how to do that."

The Vikings kicked off to the Trevians to start the game and forced them to punt on the first possession.

Fremd took over at the New Trier 49 and had a solid drive going down to the Trevians' 4. A holding penalty and a lost fumble on the next play killed the drive.

The Vikings got the ball back on New Trier's next possession on an interception from Ryan Palmer. His return set the Vikings up at the New Trier 41.

Nick Rattin scored from 3 yards out and Anthony Piasecki converted to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead. Rattin wore No. 2 as a tribute to his teammate Ben Kurka, who was injured last week against Hersey and is lost for the season.

New Trier scored twice in the second quarter and took a 13-7 lead at the half.

Fremd opened the second half with a 9-play, 80 yard drive to take the lead at 14-7. Ryan Saxe scored from a yard out and Piasecki made the PAT.

The Vikings appeared to stop the Trevians on their first possession of the second half. New Trier was attempting a field goal on fourth-and-9 when an untimely unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave the Trevians new life with a first down at the Fremd 10. New Trier scored three plays later.

Both teams scored in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late for Fremd (0-3).

Rattin rushed for 142 yards on the night.
