Palatine, Leyden earn first wins of season

Joe Ayala and Luke Popovic helped Palatine roll past Evanston 30-0 on Friday.

The pair combined for 5 passes for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ayala hit Popovic on touchdown passes on 69, 65 and 19 yards as the Pirates (1-2) posted their first win of the season.


Ayala also had a 5-yard touchdown run as Palatine broke an 8-game losing streak dating to last year. He was 8 of 10 passing for 197 yards and rushed 13 times for 81 yards.

Palatine travels to Park Ridge to take on Maine South next Friday night.

Leyden 22, Morton 0: Leyden won its first game of the season as the Eagles (1-2, 1-0) captured their West Suburban Gold opener.

Nick Motyka, who ran 10 times for 64 yards, scored twice for Leyden, on runs of 34 and 3 yards. Vince Frederickson (24 carries, 117 yards) also scored on a 5-yard run.

The Eagles host Willowbrook next Friday night.
