Elgin beats West Chicago for 1st win

Impending weather may have pushed the homecoming game for Elgin to Thursday, but the Maroons were rewarded with a 57-12 homecoming win against West Chicago.

The Maroons picked up their first win of the season behind an offensive explosion. Junior quarterback Giovani Griffin threw for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns in just one half of play.

Senior wide receiver Xavier Bonds had 161 receiving yards and 3 total touchdowns.

Elgin got on the board quickly with a 5-yard touchdown run by junior running back Alexander West. A successful two-point conversion gave the Maroons an 8-0 lead early.

West Chicago took more than eight minutes off the clock on its opening drive, but an interception near the goal line meant the Wildcats came away with no points. Bonds ended the first quarter with his first touchdown catch of the night, scoring on a 67-yard pass by Griffin to make it 15-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats scored their only points of the half early in the second quarter when senior wide receiver Mark Pinkevich caught a 25-yard pass from senior quarterback Luke Krogh for the touchdown. A missed extra point kept it 15-6.

Elgin junior quarterback Jeffery Lomax's first completion of the game was an 88-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Darien Jackson for a touchdown to make it 22-6. Jackson finished the game with 155 receiving yards.

Griffin found Bonds again with 1:19 left in that half for a 36-yard touchdown. Another two-point conversion and touchdown throw by Griffin, this time to West as the half expired, made it 37-6 at halftime.

Lomax took over quarterback duties for the second half for Elgin and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, including one for 55 yards. Bonds had a touchdown run of his own to make it 57-6 at the end of the third.

A rushing touchdown by Wildcats junior running back Jordan Garcia made for the 57-12 final.

Elgin takes a 1-4 record to Streamwood next week. The 0-5 Wildcats will look for their first win next week when they host Bartlett.
