Joliet Catholic runs away with Carmel Catholic

Carmel Catholic is still in search of answers after its second straight loss since starting the season with a victory.

The Corsairs had a slow start and saw visiting Joliet Catholic run away with a 49-14 victory in a Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference crossover on Friday night in Mundelein.

"(Joliet Catholic) was a good football team," Carmel coach Jason McKie said. "Give them all the credit. They've been a good football program for a long time. For us, there's no excuses. We're young but we've got to come out, focus and execute playing our brand of football, no matter who we're playing. Football is all about working and continuing to work. That's what we will do, go back to practice and get ready for another good team coming up. We will be ready to play. It's not losing, it's learning to play and that's what we did tonight."

Hilltoppers' junior running back Jordan Anderson (17 carries, 141 yards), who earlier in the day received an offer from new Illinois football coach Bret Bielema, scored once on a 16-yard run.

"The new coach (Bielema) came to me and said he likes my game and wants me to playing running back at the University of Illinois," Anderson said. "It just surprised me, because I didn't expect it on game day. It means a lot and it's a home school. I've always liked Illinois and now they are coming in with an advanced program."

Joliet Catholic (4-0) was led by junior quarterback Aidan Voss (7 of 13 passing for 101 yards and 110 yards rushing), who rushed for 2 touchdowns (31 and 8 yards) and threw for two others (8 and 13 yards).

"We put in a new offense and it was a power for a quarterback," Voss said. "We had an extra blocker so I could run the ball and it opened up perfectly with holes. We had put that in this year and we've been practicing a lot. We're all having a great time giving our seniors one last ride."

Jabril Williams also scored for JCA on a 3-yard run and a 72-yard kickoff return.

The Hilltoppers had a 28-0 lead at halftime and never looked back with a defense that stopped Carmel three times in the red zone.

"I was impressed with Carmel's offense," Joliet Catholic coach Jake Jaworski said. "I love their power scheme and the way they get behind their big lineman. You don't see that too often. They got some yards, but our defense hunkered down in the red zone and got some key stops."

Carmel scored a couple of fourth quarter touchdowns. Corsairs' sophomore quarterback Ashton Gondeck (11 of 24 passing for 232 yards) threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Jon Buckley (6 catches for 198 yards) and then Gondeck scored on a 3-yard run.
