Hersey dominant in win over Glenbrook North

Hersey showed domination on both sides of the football Friday night in its 42-0 nonconference win over Glenbrook North on Senior Night.

Running back Josh Bontje and linebacker Jack Armstrong were dominant players in the win.

Bonjte scored 5 touchdowns and rushed 14 times for 93 yards. Armstrong had 10 tackles, of which 8 were for minus yards, and a blocked pass.

"I really thought that we were going to throw the ball more tonight than run," said Bontje. "Our linemen did a heckuva job opening up the lanes for me to run. With Ben (Clawson) out it wasn't stepping up, it was stepping in. This team is so deep. If someone gets injured someone steps in."

Bontje gave credit to Miki Jovanovic, Zach Ott, Alex Jelaca, Tyler Pflomm, and Ryan Dempsey for allowing the Huskies to pick up 183 of their 463 total yards in helping the Huskies to a 4-0 start.

Quarterback Jimmy Makuh completed 13 of 22 passes for 280 yards. Breyden Smith caught 5 passes for 125 yards. Sam Nudo pulled in 3 passes for 63 yards.

Kicker Carson Koclanis converted all 6 extra points.

Armstrong and the rest of the Huskie defense stopped the Spartans cold.

Glenbrook North could manage only 14 yards on the ground and 57 yards passing.

The Spartans (2-2) could get no deeper than the Hersey 42-yard line in the third quarter.

"I was able to read the plays well because the defensive line held up their linemen," said Armstrong. "I played very consistent. We knew coming into tonight's game that both the offense and defense had to step up. We have a strong group of seniors. I couldn't do what I do with out my teammates."

Hersey led 21-0 after the first quarter. Bontje scored on a 13-yard run with 5:28 left in the first quarter. Bontje followed that with two 3-yard runs.

Brett Kersemeier added a 1-yard plunge with 7:38 left in the first half for a 28-0 lead.

Blontje scored on a 17-yard run in the third quarter and capped off his night with a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

"This is a great group with great leadership," said Hersey coach Joe Pardun. "They play with a lot of confidence. I hope people recognize us for our team. It was an emotional week for us. Since week one our defense has been very physical."

Glenbrook North coach Matt Purdy was impressed with the Huskies' play.

"They are one of the best teams in 7A," said Purdy. "They are talented on both sides of the ball. We just made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a team like Hersey."
