Wauvonda moves to 5-0 with victory over Antioch

Wauconda has been waiting for its opportunity to get past Antioch. The Bulldogs have been so close in so many games over the last few years only to see the Sequoits get past them.

On a homecoming night, Wauconda rallied with 14 unanswered points and got past visiting Antioch 24-13 in a key Northern Lake County Conference game Friday.

The Bulldogs (5-0) remained unbeaten this season and have an unblemished mark in the NLCC at 3-0.

"It's nice to get the win, and we have more to do after this," Wauconda coach Dave Mills said. "We knew that it was going to be a battle and they are who they are. They won the conference last year. We've had some great battles with them. It's nice to be on top instead of being one point under."

Wauconda let its defense and offense step up at a critical time of the game, which helped pull out the victory.

"These kids believe in themselves," Mills said. "They just want to go and play. The defense stepped up and the offense went fast tempo. They love to play the game and they go out there and play it."

Down 17-13 in the third quarter, the Bulldogs made a push back for the lead. Clayton Glasby caught the touchdown that put the Bulldogs up for good.

He caught a 23-yard ball from Vince Bennett that made the score 17-13 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.

"I wanted us to win the game," Glasby said. "I remember last season, when we let in that 2-point conversion. We all wanted this win and we wanted to come out with it. We worked hard and earned this. We had to keep going."

Vince Bennett added a 5-yard rushing touchdown with 2:07 left in the fourth quarter that extended the lead to 24-13.

Nick Bennett, who was also the homecoming king for Wauconda, recovered a fumble and had an interception for the Bulldogs.

"I put a lot of dedication in this sport and I work hard," Nick Bennett said. "I am always working at it and put football first.

Antioch (2-3, 2-1) rallied back from a 10-0 halftime deficit with 13 points in the third quarter. Andy Bowles scored on a 51-yard run and Joey Neumann caught a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 13-10 Sequoits lead.

However, Antioch committed a couple of turnovers in the fourth quarter and was stopped in the red zone twice, giving up the ball on fourth downs in the first half.

"It was a good battle," Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said.

"We lost the turnover battle. When you put the ball on the ground, you're not going to win playoff games.

"That's what this was, a playoff game."
