Barrington tops Fremd for 5th win

Fifty years this fall John Eliasik was patrolling the sidelines of Hale Hildebrandt Field on the campus of Fremd High School directing the new football program at Harper College as it used the Vikings' home field as its own during their debut campaign.

Flash forward to Friday night on the very same field as Eliasik's grandson, Caiden Suchy, Fremd's junior quarterback, was seeking to guide his team to a second win in its final three games as it attempted to finish a season that lived up to the philosophy of Murphy's Law in which everything that could go wrong did during an 0-6 start.

The Vikes sought to emerge triumphant against a Barrington unit that had won two of its last three games after being 2-3 at one point this season and in need of one more victory to earn a near-certain playoff berth for a ninth straight fall.

Thanks to an offense that churned out nearly 500 yards of total offense, the Broncos were able to gallop past Fremd 42-14 Friday night.

Barrington (5-4, 3-2) will enter the IHSA's selection Saturday with between 40-43 playoff points.

"The coaches set a high standard for everyone," Bronco senior RB Evan Panesis said. "They hold us accountable for everything, so there's a lot of pressure, but it helps us succeed. Last game and this game we've been killing it performing well and I knew that I had to just bring it all out on the field."

And it would be Panesis (19 carries, 141 yards, 1 reception, 44 yards) who would be the leader with 4 touchdowns on the night - 3 on the ground (25, 2, and 9 yards) plus a 44 yard TD reception from Harley Thompson that had them ahead 28-0 midway through the third.

Barrington added two more TD runs from fellow seniors Thompson (3 yards) and Connor Lee (44 yards) to complete the scoring while Fremd (1-8, 1-4) got two second-half TD passes from the combination of Suchy to Archie Cox. Suchy finished 19 of 38 for 217 yards.

"All we kept talking about all week was to be able to have one more week together and all that's what these guys wanted," an elated Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said.

"This is a heck of a team here."
