St. Viator rallies for win in Kmet's debut at QB

St. Viator turned to Cooper Kmet to change its fortunes Friday in Chicago Heights.

Kmet, who is a sophomore and the younger brother of former St. Viator star and current Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet, made his first varsity start at quarterback and led the Lions to an 18-14 win over Marian Catholic.

 

The win broke a two-game losing streak for St. Viator (4-2, 1-1). It also put the Lions in a position to claim a state playoff berth with a win in their final three games.

Kmet was 15-of-25 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. Michael Nix had 5 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Nix also had a rushing touchdown.

Schaumburg 30, Fremd 23 (2 OT):

Schaumburg (3-3, 1-1) outlasted Fremd (0-6, 0-2) in two overtimes. Anthony DiGioia scored both touchdowns in overtime for the Saxons on runs of four and five yards. Najari Williams had a seven-yard touchdown run for the Saxons while Joey Macaluso had a 34-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Kula.

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Spedale had a pair of touchdown runs for the Vikings, including one in overtime. Jerry Chima had a four-yard touchdown run and finished with 78 rushing yards. Ja Martinez had 138 rushing yards for Fremd.

Buffalo Grove 45, Wheeling 15:

Michael Cervantes scored three touchdowns as the Bison (3-3) rolled. Cervantes (11 carries, 166 yards) had a 63-yard touchdown run. He also caught a pair of touchdown passes of 41 and 12 yards from Payton Diaz (9-of-14, 140 yards). Matthew Maradkel, Anthony Palano and Mitchell Verdico each had touchdown runs for Buffalo Grove. Wheeling (3-3, 1-1) got touchdown runs from AJ Marchetti and Simon Micula.

Niles North 20, Maine East 19:

Maine East (1-5, 0-2) fell a bit short of picking up its second win of the season. Niles North scored a touchdown and conversion kick with 2:44 to play to hold off the Blue Demons. Yusef Awad had a 65-yard touchdown run for Maine East while Adam Awad scored on runs of three and two yards.

Maine West 36, Vernon Hills 13:

Maine West (3-3, 2-0) remained unbeaten in the Central Suburban North. Tommy Delaney (14-of-18, 238 yards) had five touchdown passes for the Warriors. Delaney threw three touchdowns to Szymon Grom (9 receptions, 134 yards) covering 30, 13 and 45 yards. Delaney also connected with Ben Cooper on a 36-yard score and a five-yarder to Adam Aboebied. Vernon Hills (0-6, 0-2) scored on a pair of touchdowns passes.

Grayslake Central 49, Grant 33:

The Rams (4-2, 2-2) picked up a huge win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kaidan Miller had a trio of touchdown runs covering 41, 35 and 31 yards. Cole Gillette threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Guenther as the Rams piled up 485 yards of offense. Grayslake North 28, Lakes 7:

Grayslake North (5-1, 3-1) scored 21 second-half points for the victory. Tyson Dewey ran the opening kickoff back for Lakes (3-3, 2-2). Michael Jefferson then busted off a 72-yard touchdown run to turn the tide for the Knights. Jacob Donahue had a six-yard touchdown run and threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jefferson, who would close out the scoring with a four-yard run.

Warren 48, Mundelein 8:

It was big plays for a big win as Warren (5-1, 3-1) bounced back in a huge way after its loss last week to Lake Zurich. Charley Thompson had touchdown runs of 60 and 70 yards while Cassius Callahan scored on a 67-yard punt return and a 61-yard run. Adam Behrens threw a pair of touchdown passes including a 22-yarder to Justin Kretz as the Blue Devils built a 49-0 lead in the third quarter. Mundelein (3-3, 2-2) scored a late touchdown on a two-yard run by Adam Alkhatib.

Round Lake 28, North Chicago 20: Round Lake (1-5, 1-3) picked up their first win of the season. Easton Nixon threw a pair of touchdown passes to Taevion Mays that covered 29 yards and a 23-yarder to Kevin Johnson.

Leyden 49, Proviso East 12:

It was a happy homecoming as Leyden (1-5, 1-3) claimed its first win of the year in a big way.
