Desherow wins head coaching debut at Loyola Academy; New Trier falls
Beau Desherow led Loyola Academy football to victory in his head coaching debut.
The Ramblers traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a 45-7 victory over Catholic Central on Aug. 26.
Junior quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald completed 17 of 21 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns, according to Loyola statistician Mike Zielinski. Passing to Joe Kelly and Owen Joyce for scores, Fitzgerald added 41 yards rushing including a touchdown to start the second quarter.
Returning back Drew MacPherson ran for 39 yards with a score, and added 36 yards receiving.
Finn Miller ran for 58 yards and Will Carlson caught 3 passes for 50 yards.
Senior linebacker Colin Scheid tied for the team lead with 6 tackles. Scheid also had 2 sacks, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass.
The Ramblers, who led 31-0 late in the third quarter, amassed 408 yards of offense against a team that went 11-2 last season.
It was the first game as head coach for longtime Ramblers assistant Desherow, a 1993 Loyola graduate and former all-state linebacker.
Loyola visits Naperville North (1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1.
Hersey 30, New Trier 12
Highly regarded Hersey led New Trier 23-0 at halftime in a nonconference Aug. 25 opener in Arlington Heights.
All of the Trevians' points came in the fourth quarter against Hersey, 10-1 last season.
Trailing 30-0, New Trier got on the board with a safety and added Nikola Dugandzic's 45-yard field goal.
In the last minute the Trevians' Chris Donnelly completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Ben Zieziula for the final score.
New Trier visits Yorkville (1-0) at 7 p.m. Sept. 1.
