Week 2 Football MVPs

Here are the offensive and defensive MVPs for Week 2 of the high school football season, as selected by the Daily Herald staff.

Offensive MVP:Dalton Lundeen, Streamwood: This 6-foot-2, 194-pound senior quarterback riddled the Dundee-Crown secondary in a 40-17 victory that improved Streamwood#146;s record to 2-0 for the first time since 2002. The lefty completed 12-of-14 attempts for 252 yards, including touchdown passes of 14, 63 and 18 yards.

Offensive runners-up:Dan Arden, Antioch: Pardon, Arden. He kept running over would-be tacklers. But that#146;s the style of football that the senior fullback plays. The captain and two-year varsity starter punished host Waukegan, rushing 28 times for 183 yards and a pair of a touchdowns. His effort led the Sequoits to a 17-7 win.

Jack Petrando, St. Francis: The 6-foot junior running back ran for 2 touchdowns and 200 yards on 31 carries. It was the effort he gave at the end that made the difference in the Spartans#146; 22-21 nonconference win over Vernon Hills. After St. Francis scored with 4.1 seconds left to play, the 210-pound Petrando bulled in with the game-winning 2-point conversion.

John Serio, Palatine: Palatine handed the powerful junior the ball 36 times and Serio piled up 229 yards in a 30-13 Mid-Suburban League crossover win at Rolling Meadows. Serio#146;s 4-yard touchdown put Palatine ahead to stay and he answered Meadows#146; scores with TD runs of 6 and 17 yards.

Parker Woodworth, Geneva: The Vikings#146; senior tailback was not to be denied in Geneva#146;s 33-24 nonconference victory over Wheaton North. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Woodworth scored 3 first-quarter touchdowns, on runs of 16, 6 and 5 yards to keep the visitors reeling. Woodworth ran for 105 yards in the first half and finished with 172 yards on 29 carries.

Defensive MVPRoss Murphy, Naperville Central: The Redhawks#146; senior defensive back played a crucial role in Naperville Central#146;s 28-14 nonconference win over visiting Neuqua Valley. Murphy snagged 3 interceptions #8212; including two fourth-quarter picks #8212; and returned them for a total of 51 yards. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound safety added 3 solo tackles and 3 assists.

Defensive runners-upTyler Lees, Carmel Catholic: Please, don#146;t run toward Lees. A two-year starting outside linebacker and tackling machine, the senior piled up 11 stops, including 6 solos, in the Corsairs#146; home opener against Nazareth. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 56 yards, as the hosts won 27-3.

Zach Marszal, Cary-Grove: Marszal helped Cary-Grove improve to 2-0 by picking off a pair of passes in a 10-7 victory at highly regarded Lake Zurich. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior safety grabbed 2 interceptions deep in his own territory to keep the Bears at bay. It was the second straight game in which Marszal finished with 2 picks.

Colin Otubu, Conant: Otubu was bad news for Wheeling#146;s offense in Conant#146;s 26-7 Mid-Suburban League crossover victory. The senior defensive end had 5 solo tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 1 forced fumble and a fumble recovery as the Cougars improved to 2-0.

Kendall Williams, West Aurora: Always in the right place, the 5-foot-10, 224-pound senior linebacker was unrelenting in his pursuit of St. Charles East in West Aurora#146;s 20-7 nonconference victory. For a second straight week Williams led his team in tackles, making 8 solo stops and adding 1 assist for the Blackhawks. #147;He does not miss tackles,#148; coach Nate Eimer said.
