Lake Forest handles Mundelein

Bob Stone recalled the fumble last week on the goal line. But that was nothing like the Mundelein football coach witnessed Friday night in Lake Forest.

“This game has no business being 28-0 at halftime,’’ Stone said. “It’s very frustrating. And we had that long drive before halftime and had 4 penalties on it.”

It might have been a little aggravating for Lake Forest running back Owen Williams as well. The Scouts senior scored 3 touchdowns but could have easily had 5 touchdowns, but penalties erased those scores as well.

Lake Forest kept Mundelein winless on the season with a 49-0 NSC Lake Division romp.

Sure, Williams (11 carries, 170 yards) was a handful for the Mustangs (0-3), but count them, 6 turnovers, was a big reason the Mustangs fell on this night.

“I wish I knew what was causing that,’’ Stone said. “Maybe guys were starting to think too much about it.”

The Mustangs didn’t play favorites fumbling the ball three times and throwing 3 interceptions.

It really didn’t start out to be a one-sided affair. With Andy Chernyavskiy and Matt Heppert keeping the Scouts’ offense honest, it took Lake Forest (2-1) 11 plays to punch the ball in as Williams scored from a yard out.

Mundelein seemed to answer the score when speedy returner L.D. Frison returned the kickoff into Lake Forest territory. The drive stalled and Lake Forest had to start out at their own 20. One Williams spurt later and it was 14-0. He bolted in from 80 yards out.

“I’m not saying we would have won without the turnovers,’’ Stone said. “Lake Forest has some good players.”

Maybe the game wasn’t out of reach entering the second quarter but another Williams score from 47 yards out and a touchdown pass from quarterback Gable Leppert to Phil Quach made it 28-0. That second score was only a 26-yard

drive following a Mundelein fumble.

“We are going to correct what we can correct,’’ Stone said.

Mundelein’s most impressive drive of the night ended the first half. The Mustangs drove nearly 80 yards before surrendering the ball on an interception. Frison showed off some of his skills with runs of 26 and 19 yards during this march. However, three offensive penalties crippled the drive.

Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli freely substituted in the second half. That didn’t slow down the Scouts too much. Scott Powell scored on a 45 yard run.

That was topped by sophomore Stephen Cirame who out-raced Mundelein’s defense on a 96-yard touchdown run.

“We haven’t hit the real meat of our schedule,’’ Stone said. “That means Liberyville, Lake Zurich and Warren. But we’ll have to keep on going. We’ll wake up on Monday and keep on going.”

Mundelein’s reserves made one last effort at denting the scoreboard. Akee Brown stormed 41 yards inside the Lake Forest 20-yard line. Mundelein could only reach the 9-yard line when the running clock expired.
