Antioch defense downright stingy this season

Bah humbug!

No other defense in Lake County has been less generous in the points department this season than Antioch.

The Sequoits have allowed a total of just 26 points, and they had a shutout in Week 3 against a Libertyville team that is averaging 25 points per game in its other three contests.

On Friday, the Antioch defense tightened up again, holding Vernon Hills and its explosive option offense to just 7 points, and 148 total yards. The Sequoits held on for a 10-7 victory.

“Our defense has had its back against the wall in each game we’ve played and they’ve been able to come up big at the right times,” Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. “Someone every single week makes a big play when we need it.”

Defensive back George Gonzalez came up with a huge interception in the final minute to preserve the win.

Glashagel also cited defensive backs Steve Smith and Blake Harris as well as lineman Gregg Van Dycke as being difference makers against Vernon Hills.

“Smitty made some great plays and Blake broke up some big plays,” Glashagel said. “Gregg made a big sack at the end for a loss and he wasn’t even playing at 100 percent. He is one of our best defensive players and was out last week with a high ankle spring. But he stepped up.”

Lake Zurich and Grayslake Central have also stepped up the intensity on defense. They are nipping at Antioch’s heels in terms of scoring stinginess.

Both Lake Zurich and Grayslake Central have allowed only 27 points apiece so far this season. Grayslake Central is coming off of two straight shutouts and Lake Zurich got one this weekend.
