Prep sports primer: BG honors coach

The timing couldn't be better for Buffalo Grove to name its stadium after football coach Grant Blaney as the dedication ceremony at today's game will include a 25th anniversary celebration of his undefeated 1986 Class 6A state championship team. Marty Maciaszek explains what makes Blaney more than just a great football coach. Wave watching: At halftime of St. Edward's football game against Marian Central next Friday, the school will induct Joe Manning, Lissa Fehlman and the 1971-72 boys basketball team into its Hall of Fame. John Radtke details their road to greatness, including a very personal brush with that terrific Green Wave hoops team from the early 70's.

Get your kicks: There's a wealth of high school place-kicking talent out there this year. Kevin Schmit explains how kickers such as Naperville North's Ron Coluzzi are making the special teams play in DuPage County quite special indeed. In Lake County, as Patricia Babcock McGraw details, Carmel's Steven O'Block is changing the standard for excellence after nailing a 47-yard field goal #8212; in the rain.

Cadets comeback: Marmion's strategic change helped spark a 3-1 boys soccer victory over host St. Charles East at Norris Stadium on Thursday, adding to what is becoming a very special season for the Cadets.

Game time: It's Week 5 of the high school football season, and postseason realities are starting to hit home for area teams. Take your pick of these can't-miss showdowns: Fremd at Conant, Naperville Central at Wheaton Warrenville South, Larkin at Elgin, Libertyville at Stevenson and, in a battle of unbeatens, Rochelle at Kaneland.
