Waubonsie Valley wants to keep making gains
Although from different perspectives, Waubonsie Valley coach Paul Murphy and Streamwood coach Mark Orszula said the same thing after Friday night’s 56-7 Waubonsie victory in Aurora.
There’s a lot of football left to be played.
From the Warriors’ perspective, the 2-1 team looked strong against the 0-3 Sabres and the made the most of nearly all its opportunities on offense.
Waubonsie Valley begins Upstate Eight divisional play next week with a trip Friday to West Chicago, the newest member of the Valley Division, and Murphy is stressing continued improvement to his team.
“I’m happy with our execution tonight. I’m sure when I see the film, I’ll see mistakes and we’ll have to correct them,” he said.
Murphy was especially pleased with how the Warriors offense responded against Streamwood’s three-man defensive front, especially since its use wasn’t a given going into the game and not the sole focus during Waubonsie’s practices this week.
Christian Gibbs, along with Jon Fizer and Tony Durns, each scored 2 touchdowns as the Warriors dominated from start to finish.
Quarterback Jack Eddy found Gibbs about 5 yards ahead of a last defender for a 41-yard touchdown pass 3:06 in the game. Josh Polhill kicked the first of 8 extra points to make it 7-0.
With just under eight minutes until halftime, Eddy threw to Gibbs on almost the exact same play, this one going for 65 yards and a 35-0 advantage.
The big plays were not done yet as Eddy threw a 30-yard ball to Fizer, his second touchdown of the first half, for a 42-0 lead at intermission and a running clock in the second half. Waubonise led in offensive yards at halftime 285-22.
“I give all the credit to my quarterback and offensive line,” Gibbs said. “I’m not the only one that can go deep and catch. We have a ton of tools and still haven’t used them all yet.”
Eddy also ran for a touchdown and Ryan Berg ran for Waubonsie Valley’s last score of the night.
“We cannot get complacent. We have to continue to work hard and take one game at a time,” Gibbs said.
Orszula stressed to his team at halftime to keep its effort going and that resulted in a nice drive that broke the shutout.
The Sabres drove 69 yards in 7:41 and capped things off with quarterback Mason Polich’s 9-yard keeper.
Orszula believes his team can make progress and be competitive and there’s plenty of time to accomplish that.
“We have got a long way to go. But there’s a lot of time. We need to continue to work hard and come to every practice and work hard,” he said
