Brey, Lakes get it done

Mike Brey picked up where he left off last week.

The senior scored 3 touchdowns to lead Lakes past host Mundelein 35-21 in a North Suburban Conference crossover Friday night.

Brey rushed for 165 yards, scoring on runs of 1, 7 and 20 yards, as the Eagles finished the regular season at 8-1 overall with their eighth straight victory.

Brey had 5 touchdowns, including a defensive score, against North Chicago last week.

“I wouldn’t be able to do it without the (offensive) line.” said Brey, a starting linebacker, who’s filled in at running back in place of the injured Cameron Johnson. “I jump on their backs sometimes.”

Brey will hang out with his teammates tonight to find out who they play in the first round of the state playoffs.

“Our coaches have been filling us in on who we might be playing so we’ll get together to watch and see,” Brey said.

Eagles coach Luke Mertens is exited that Lakes will host its first postseason game.

“We have a few ideas on who we play and our coaches will fill me in on that,” Mertens said. “Anything can happen depending on how the games go tonight. We’re going to get together and see what happens.”

Lakes quarterback T.J. Edwards missed his second straight game and will miss the first round of the playoffs.

“He will not be ready for the first round,” Mertens said.

Lakes scored 35 unanswered points in the first half. Mundelein (1-8) staged a comeback and scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.
