Daily Herald sports site earns Top 10 honor

For the second consecutive year, the Daily Herald earned a Top 10 Sports award for its website as judged by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Competing among websites that draw up to 1.9 million users per month, the Daily Herald shares the Top 10 distinction along with the Baton Rouge (La.) Advocate, Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera, Buffalo (N.Y.) News, Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, The Oakland (Mich.) Press, The State (Columbia, SC), The Tennessean (Nashville) and the Tulsa (Okla.) World.

“Our website growth and development is important, and we are very honored to be in such great company,” said Daily Herald Sports Editor Tom Quinlan. “Our readers tell us they enjoy the enhancements made to our prep sports sites (football.dailyherald.com and basketball.dailyherald.com). Along with a great partnership with HighSchoolCube, I'm proud of the newsroom team that contributes to the expanded video, photos and stories we produce for it.

In the five-year history of the contest, six newspapers have earned top-10 distinction every year: the New York Daily News, The New York Times, The Oklahoman, The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News, USA Today and The Washington Post, according to APSE vice president Mike Sherman.

The sites were judged over two randomly selected dates.. The contest is split into three categories: Over 2 million average monthly unique visitors, 500,000 to 1.9 million visitors and under 500,000.

In the larger category, the Chicago Tribune received an honorable mention. In the under 500,000 users contest, the News-Gazette in Champaign, the Northwest-Herald in Crystal Lake, and the Sauk Valley (Ill.) Media also received honorable mention.
