Brown, DeKalb rush past Vernon Hills

DeKalb 33, Vernon Hills 14: Lightning delayed the start of the season opener in DeKalb County until 10 p.m. Friday.

The visiting Cougars surrendered 27 points in the opening quarter. Andres Salazar caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter for Vernon Hills, but it was all DeKalb after that. Illinois-bound running back Dre Brown busted off an 83-yard TD run and finished with 169 yards on the ground.

"DeKalb is good," Vernon Hills coach Bill Bellecomo said. "Dre Brown is the real deal. We had a lot of kids playing their first varsity game, and it took us a quarter to get used to the speed of the game."

Vernon Hills plays Larkin at Elgin's Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
