St. Edward rolls over Chicago Clark

It may have been a depleted Chicago Clark team that hobbled into Greg True Field on Friday night, but St. Edward wasn't about to take anything for granted.

The host Green Wave never steered away from their mission as it routed the Eagles 56-0 in nonconference action.

Quarterback Joe Mullen tossed 3 touchdowns, the defense scored twice, and running back Dwayne Allen ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for St. Edward.

"I like the way we came out of the gate and took care of business," St. Edward coach Mike Rolando said. " I thought we made some good improvements from week one. Joe threw the ball real well and the running game really came around."

The Green Wave (2-0) were without one of their top offensive weapons, running back Danny Favella, who fell ill early in the day with appendicitis. However, sophomore Trevor Loewen stepped in to fill the void. Lowen was on the receiving end of two 18-yard touchdown passes from Mullen in the first quarter. Mullen later added a 37-yard touchdown pass to Nick Duffy in the second quarter.

"I had all the faith that Trevor could step in and do the job for us," said Mullen. "He runs the routes as good as anyone out here. I was happy with the way the whole team played. On offense it all starts with the line and they did a great job."

The Green Wave added 2 defensive touchdowns in the first quarter to lead 28-0. Brandon Ostrander recovered a fumble in the end zone and Santos Gomez had a 6-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Allen had the play of the game and maybe one of the plays of the year when he zigzagged his way down the field, completely reversing direction three times and breaking several tackles along the way for a 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

"That play was just sick," said Rolando. "Unbelievable. He has a lot of talent."

Allen also had runs of 12 and 30 yards on the first two plays from scrimmage to set up the Wave's first touchdown. Another 53-yard touchdown run by Allen was called back because of a holding call away from the play.

David Groves capped off the scoring in the first half with a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Green Wave up 49-0 at the half. Patrick Brown added a 20-yard touchdown run for St. Edward in the second half.

The St. Edward defense held Chicago Clark to just 31 yards and stopped the Eagles 11 times for losses. Ruben Montiel had a pair of sacks.

Chicago Clark (0-2) graduated 15 seniors from last year's squad and had five starters out with injuries. The Eagles started just one senior.
