Hinsdale South (1-0) at Glenbard West (1-0) Nonconference
Game time: 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Last week: Hinsdale South 43, Romeoville 14; Glenbard West 28, Bolingbrook 7.
Last year: Did not play.
Outlook: Glenbard West is favored to win the WSC Silver while the Hornets are an early pick to claim the Gold title.
The key for both - beyond handling the Duchon Field grass that took a beating in the rain last week - is standing tall on defense. Glenbard West's linebackers, led by Nico Gagliano and Ross Andreasik, are as good as expected.
They aim to contain Hornets running back Marcus Curry, who last week rushed for 120 yards, and quarterback Sean McCormack, who threw for 287 yards. On defense the Hornets load up with Michigan State-bound lineman Josh King and defensive back Robert Hall, who also led the team with 7 catches for 188 yards. Hilltoppers quarterback Brian Cochrane showed tremendous poise, but the offense still leans heavily on the run.
Vanderbilt-bound running back Sam Brodner was limited to 60 rushing yards, but Isaiah Skinner stepped up with 85 rushing yards and an 82-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Next week: Hinsdale South at Downers Grove South; York at Glenbard West.
