Hampshire wants better execution against Grayslake Central

Grayslake Central (0-2, 0-0) at Hampshire (1-1, 0-0)

Fox Valley (Fox)

Game time: 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Last week: Prairie Ridge 70, Grayslake Central 0; Grayslake North 28, Hampshire 18

Last year: Hampshire 31, Grayslake Central 14

Outlook: Hampshire had a crack at Grayslake North in the FVC Fox Division opener last week, but the Whip-Purs hurt themselves with "a comedy of errors," which is how coach Mike Brasile referred to 13 penalties for over 100 yards.

"We would get in the red zone and jump offsides and we just had too many critical errors, which you can't do against good teams," he said. "We just didn't execute the way I know we can, for whatever reason. We've spent this week focusing on the details and making sure we're doing everything we possibly can correctly."

Hampshire should get a lift from playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season. The Whips are led offensively by quarterback Jake Vincent, who has completed 42 of 70 attempts for 518 yards and 3 touchdowns against 3 interceptions. Two key weapons in the spread offense have been senior Xavier Bennett (13 catches, 220 yards, 2 TD) and senior Jake Manning (16 rec., 145 yards, TD). Senior running back Jeremy Curran has rushed 26 times for 169 yards and a touchdown.

They should thrive against a Grayslake Central defense that has allowed 111 points in losses to Vernon Hills and Prairie Ridge.

The Hampshire defense needs to stiffen after allowing 605 total yards through 2 games. Senior Michael Kruse leads the defense with 2 interceptions.

Next week: Jacobs at Grayslake Central; Huntley at Hampshire
