Barrington's quick-strike approach sinks Elk Grove

Elk Grove's football team controlled the clock Friday night - but Barrington controlled the game.

The Broncos had 4 scoring plays of more than 60 yards en route to a 42-18 victory in a Mid-Suburban League divisional crossover to improve to 3-0.

"We didn't have the ball very much, but when we did, we made the most of it," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "I am proud of the kids and they were excited to be playing at home."

In the second half, Barrington had the ball for only 2:45 but put up 150 yards on 8 plays. The Broncos finished the night with 469 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Johnny Davidson got the Broncos started early with a 76-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and kept the pace going throughout the contest.

"This is our first home game so it was very fun to play here," Davidson said. "The crowd was amazing. The student section was packed. When we got some of those big plays, some of our biggest plays of the season thus far, it was great to hear the crowd cheer for us as loud as they could, so it was phenomenal."

The senior had touchdown passes of 62 yards and 86 yards to Josh Babicz and Logan Moews, respectively.

Babicz also scored on a 9-yard pass from Davidson to take a 28-6 lead into the half.

"It is just executing, really," Babicz said. "All week during practice we executed those certain plays you saw. We just ran them well tonight."

In the fourth quarter, Davidson finished his night with a 62-yard scoring run.

He ended the game with 154 yards rushing and 252 yards passing.

"He is a kid that prepares very hard," Sanchez said of Davidson. "He is ready for every opportunity that comes his way. He does a good job at getting our offense in the right place and getting us to execute at a high level."

Nate King added 52 yards rushing and a touchdown on 8 carries. Moews had 3 receptions for 99 yards, while Babicz had 5 catches for 108 yards.

Elk Grove kept it close early with AJ Lorenz hooking up with Josh Collier with for an 11-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter to trail 7-6. Barrington junior Dave Lozzio blocked the kick to help Barrington hold on to the lead.

"We just thought we still have three quarters to go to score as many points as we can," Babicz said of Barrington's mindset coming out of the first quarter.

Barrington went on a 21-0 run in the second half to pull away.

Elk Grove added a 2-yard touchdown from Azeez Alabi and 8-yard touchdown from Peter Green in the second half. Alabi finished the night with 125 yards rushing.

Elk Grove (0-3) has had a tough start to the season, as all three of its opponents have yet to lose a game.

Despite the loss, Elk Grove coach John Sigmund said he is seeing improvement from his team.

"The last few weeks we put ourselves in a hole, but the kids were fighting for four quarters," Sigmund said. "I am extremely proud of my ball club and the fight. We just need to start fast and that will be the emphasis for the remainder of the season."
