Montini celebrates anniversary in style

It was a scoring drive befitting of a golden anniversary.

Overcoming 3 penalties for 25 yards, Montini quarterback Justin Blake had the resolve to find a fourth first-half touchdown for the Broncos.

Prince Walker used some punishing blocks to finish the 13-play drive as the Montini halfback scored the second of his 2 touchdowns from 8 yards away.

The Broncos completely dominated both sides of the ball in their Chicago Catholic League Green contest against De La Salle on Saturday afternoon in Lombard.

The Meteors were limited to a lone first down in each of the four quarters as Montini rolled to a 38-0 triumph.

The lone disappointing issue for the Broncos was the weeklong commemoration celebrating its 50th-year in existence was delayed by a day.

But there was no denying the potency of the Broncos' effect on both sides of the ball.

"It was just the explosiveness of our offense," Blake said of the drive that provided Montini a 28-0 cushion midway through the second quarter. "We just came back and did the things we knew we could do."

The senior quarterback ran the Broncos' option offense with near flawless precision.

Blake opened the scoring on the opening drive with a 13-yard keeper.

Montini (4-0, 1-0) needed only three plays to double its first-quarter lead as Blake collaborated with Tyler Millikan with a 10-yard strike.

Blake finished 13 of 20 for 163 yards and a pair of scoring strikes in playing only in the first half.

Walker galloped 54 yards one play after converting a fourth-down plunge for Montini as part of his 11-carry, 120-yard performance.

By the coaches' mutual consent, the final two-plus quarters were played with a running clock when Brandon Beyer closed the Broncos' 35-point first-half explosion.

De La Salle (1-3, 0-1) could manage only 63 yards of offense for the game as the Broncos forced 7 punts, a lost fumble and forfeiture on downs.

"We just wanted to focus on getting into the game and having fun," Montini linebacker John Embry said. "Everybody was ready to go."

Virtually none of the Montini starters played after halftime.

After five consecutive extra points to open the game, Montini kicker Michael Cooney converted a 22-yard field goal for the only points after the break.

The Broncos certainly left a lasting impression on Mike Boehm.

"That's a very good team over there," the De La Salle coach said. "It's one of the better teams I have seen over the last couple of years. Their skill is tremendous; their defense is very fast."

"We had a very good game overall," Montini coach Chris Andriano said. "Our kids are playing very good football."
