Glenbard West's Brodner keeping options open

Sam Brodner's back on the market.

The Glenbard West senior running back, who in June verbally committed to play football at Vanderbilt University, last week notified the coaching staff that he's reopening his recruiting. Stressing the decision wasn't easy, Brodner believes it's necessary.

"It was nothing against the school, I just wanted to keep my options open," he said. "It's exciting, but it's also a lot going on again. I'll be pretty busy."

Brodner has scholarship offers from Illinois, Syracuse and Iowa State, and he hopes to make at least three official campus visits before committing. The NCAA's recruiting "dead period" began on Monday, meaning Brodner can't pick up the process again until the middle of January.

National Signing Day is Feb. 3, and Brodner hopes to have his decision made by then.

"I'm anxious to make my visits," he said. "I'll have to see how many I can take."

This season Brodner rushed for 1,917 yards and scored 47 touchdowns while leading Glenbard West to an unbeaten romp to the Class 7A title. Named the Daily Herald's DuPage County 2015 All-Area captain, Brodner also was named Gatorade's Player of the Year in Illinois.

"I didn't think about recruiting much during the season," Brodner said. "Now that I've had a chance to think about it the last few weeks, I just thought it was time to reconsider everything."
