Week 7 a good time for the Edgyies

Since we are now at the middle portion of the 2008 IHSA football season (seven weeks in the books and seven weeks left to play) it's time to hand out some of the greatest awards ever known to mankind, or something to that effect.

Enjoy these midseason awards, affectionately called the Edgyies.

It's Good to Be ... award: Either Vernon Hills coach Tony Monken and/or Antioch coach Brian Glashagel these days. Both programs are 6-0 heading into their matchup Friday in Vernon Hills, and both schools have already secured state playoff berths. Antioch in particular is an impressive story so far this fall, as the Sequoits have gone from 0-9 in 2006 to 3-6 in 2007 to their current 6-0 record so far in 2008.

Willing to Sell/Trade Playoff Points award: Glenbard North (3-3/2-2). Ask any Panthers fan about the schedule their team has played to this point of the season, and they will tell you that they have played one of the toughest schedules top to bottom in the state. The Panthers and coach Ryan Wilkins have an impressive 38 playoff points, but I'm willing to bet that the Panthers would gladly sell or trade in a few of those playoff points for say an extra win on the slate. The Panthers still need to win two of their last three games to qualify for the state playoff field.

Thought They Would Kick Butt and They Have So Far award: Wheaton Warrenville South (6-0). The Tigers might graduated some top players every year, but Ron Muhitch always seems to just reload year in and year out and that looks to also include assistant coaches this fall as well.

Thought They Would Kick Butt and They Haven't So Far award: Morris (2-4) has been a traditional power in Class 5A, but a serious lack of offensive point output (39 points scored in six weeks) have put the Redskins just one more loss from being eliminated from the state playoff field. The Redskins face three straight must-win games starting this Friday at Plainfield South (4-2).

The Too Cool for School award: The Daily Herald's very own retiring in-house prep legend Bob Frisk, who on Saturday at Barrington I had the pleasure of roaming the sidelines with. Seems that Mr. Frisk works that cell phone of his just like one of the new kids on the block. Nice going, sir, and the EDGY Nation salutes you.

The We'll Just Outscore Everyone award: The entire Mid-Suburban West, which has allowed a whopping 834 points against in just six games this fall, and every MSL West team has allowed triple digits in points scored so far. That's a less than impressive 23 points per game folks. Fortunately for the Mid Suburban West, those same teams have scored 998 points so far for an average of nearly 28 points per game.

The Hard to Believe award: Four Chicago Catholic League Blue conference schools (Loyola/St. Rita/Mt. Carmel and Brother Rice) who have scored almost as many points after six games as Otto Zeman and Riverside-Brookfield's touted A-11 spread passing attack.
