Week 5: Scouting the West Suburban

Lyons Twp. (4-0, 1-0) at Glenbard West (4-0, 2-0)

West Suburban Silver

Game time: 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Last week: Lyons Twp. 38, Leyden 13; Glenbard West 35, Downers Grove North 0.

Last year: Glenbard West 35, Lyons Twp. 0.

Outlook: The first of numerous upcoming pivotal Silver matchups is a pretty good one. For all the buzz about Lions 6-foot-3 junior quarterback Ben Bryant, who holds an offer from Wisconsin, Glenbard West coach Chad Hetlet is just as concerned about the Lions' running game with Reggie Terrell and others. Glenbard West's experienced defense has been as good as advertised, evidenced last week when the unit allowed only 66 total yards in its first shutout of the season. Lineman Dionte Moorehead and others will try to put pressure on Bryant while the deep and talented corps of linebackers focuses on blitzing and run stopping. Glenbard West's offense continues to be a work in progress with so many new starters, but it's rounding into shape nicely. Folks knew about running back D.J. Ficarella heading into the season, but Dre Thomas and Ryan Diver have emerged as offensive threats through the first four games. First-year quarterback Cole Brady is also gaining confidence.

Next week: Downers Grove North at Lyons Twp.; Glenbard West at Hinsdale Central.

Addison Trail (2-2, 1-1) at Leyden (2-2, 1-0)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Between last week's running of Nick D'Ambrose and the passing of Bobby Daniels, the Blazers finally started to glimpse their offensive potential while beating Downers South. Slowing running back Donovan Brown is the defense's mission.

Downers Grove South (1-3, 1-1) at Morton (1-3, 1-0)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: To say the Mustangs were disappointed with last week's Gold loss to Addison Trail is an understatement. With a chance at the driver's seat gone, Downers South needs a win to keep pace. The Mustangs are still looking for a boost to their ground game.

Hinsdale Central (4-0, 2-0) at Proviso West (0-4, 0-2)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: The Red Devils have enjoyed pleasant surprises this season: the emergence of sophomore Luke Skokna at running back and the successful shift of Garrett Oakey to receiver. Staying healthy is the key heading into next week's showdown against Glenbard West.

Oak Park (4-0, 1-0) at Downers Grove North (1-3, 0-2)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Downers North hopes to get its offense going after last week's 66 total yards against Glenbard West. The task won't be any easier against the Huskies. Running back Marquise Brooks showed potential in the second half against the Hilltoppers.

Proviso East (0-4, 0-2) at Hinsdale South (1-3, 1-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: The Hornets finally saw the reward for a month of hard work with last week's Gold win over Willowbrook. Linebacker Deontae Curry and defensive back D.J. Anderson keep providing big plays on defense. Running back Shawn Wimberly returned from injury.

Willowbrook (2-2) at York (1-3)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Two powerful running games will pound away at each other in this critical West Suburban Conference crossover. Willowbrook, coming off a tough loss to Hinsdale South, needs six wins to reach the playoffs. York can't afford a fourth loss right now.
