Playoffs Week 2: Scouting the East Suburban Catholic
Class 7A
No. 1 Hononegah (10-0) at No. 17 Benet (7-3)
Game time: 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Benedictine University in Lisle.
Last week: Hononegah 42, No. 32 Harlem 21; Benet 35, No. 16 Maine West 13.
Outlook: Hononegah hasn't been challenged all season, but it's tough to judge the NIC-10 champion because it hasn't played no one outside the conference. That includes a first-round win over Harlem. Benet's defense is ready for anything at this point. The line of Jack Benish, Griffin Sturtz, Jack Kipp and Jacob Snell helped the Redwings notch 9 sacks last week. Hononegah quarterback Ryan Vanschevlen averages about 15 passes a game, while Davonte Washington and Isaiah Richardson have combined for 1,560 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Benet's offense made a concerted effort to get the ground game going, and it paid off with Michael Wymer, who last week ran for 120 yards. Quarterback Colin Gillespie added 80 yards.
Advancement: The winner advances to the Class 7A quarterfinals against the winner between No. 8 Hersey and No. 9 Lincoln-Way Central.
