Marmion rolls in playoff opener
Marmion got off to a good start and kept things going its way throughout in a 41-12 victory against Amundsen in Chicago Saturday in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.
Padraig Fitzgerald threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Dane Pardridge just 13 seconds into the game. Fitzgerald made it 14-0 with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
Major Haas gave the Cadets a 21-0 lead with a 34-yard touchdown run, then after Marmion recovered a fumble, Haas scored again late in the second quarter for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Pardridge caught his second touchdown pass in the second half before Anthony Saltijeral capped the scoring with a TD run.
Marmion (7-3) will host No. 2 Boylan, a 49-0 winner over Hyde Park, in the second round.
Deerfield 35, Crystal Lake South 0: The Gators (5-5) saw their season come to an end in the Class 6A playoffs with a road loss Saturday. Deerfield (8-2) blocked a punt early in the game to take a quick lead and extended its advantage to 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
Lena-Winslow 46, Aurora Christian 8: The Eagles (5-5) found out quickly why Lena-Winslow (10-0) is nationally ranked, falling behind 46-0 at halftime on the way to a first-round exit in the Class 1A playoffs.
