It was a first and third situation on Friday night for Hoffman Estates (5-1, 2-0) and Fremd (0-6, 0-2) in their Mid-Suburban West game, yet the two teams weren't playing a baseball game.

It was the first time since 1991 that Hoffman has beaten Fremd at Hale Hildebrandt Field. This will only be the third time since 1995 that the Vikings will not reach the state playoffs.

The final was score was 48-31.

"I told the kids all week that we had not won at Fremd in a very long time and that Fremd was better than their record," said Hoffman coach Tim Heyse. "This is the first time that I think we ever beat Barrington and Fremd back-to-back."

Fremd opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 20-yard field goal from Connor Cox. The Vikings used up six minutes of the first quarter to keep the potent Hoffman offense on the sidelines.

"We normally defer if we win the toss but I knew we had to keep them off the field," said Fremd coach Lou Sponsel.

The decision was short-lived as the Hawks need only one play in the first quarter to regain the lead. Jashawn Johnson caught a pass from quarterback Aiden Cyr and raced through the Fremd defense for a 61-yard touchdown. Anu Anuoluwa converted the point after touchdown.

It was the first of 4 touchdown passes for the game for the duo.

The Vikings weren't ready to give up and bounced back with a 10-play, 65-yard drive to recapture the lead at 10-7. Bo O'Brien caught a 2-yard pass from Caiden Suchy and Connor Cox converted the point after.

But the floodgates opened for the Hawks after that and they notched 3 touchdowns to jump out to a 27-10 lead at the half. Cyr had touchdown throws of 39 yards to Stephon Sellers and 32 yards to Johnson. Yoshua Pettis closed out the first-half scoring with a 48-yard touchdown run.

Fremd opened the second half with an onside kick but a penalty for illegal touching gave the Hawks the ball at the Fremd 49-yard line. Two plays later Cyr found Johnson for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Adam Michalik converted the kick.

Fremd had a 1-yard touchdown run from Jeremy Gearhart but the Hawks answered with a 14-yard touchdown run from Pettis.

Fremd opened the fourth quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Suchy to Archie Cox but Hoffman answered with a 59-yard touchdown strike from Cyr to Johnson.

The Vikings closed out the scoring with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Suchy to Ja Martinez.

Cyr was 14-of-18 for 319 yards. Johnson caught 7 passes for 222 yards while Pettis rushed for 117 yards on 10 carries.

Suchy was 24-of-38 for 247 yards and O'Brien caught 10 passes for 93 yards.
