5 storylines to watch heading into Week 2 of high school football

Here's five storylines to watch heading into Week 2 of the high school football season.

Top 20 matchups: We've got a pair of them to look forward to among the Daily Herald's Top 20 rankings including No. 9 Warren, fresh off a 41-7 win over Barrington, traveling to play No. 2 Maine South who reached the Class 8A state championship game last year. Maine South beat Warren 10-2 last year, its fifth straight win in this rivalry.

Also, No. 8 Glenbard North hosts No. 10 Naperville North in a matchup of former DuPage Valley Conference rivals. Naperville North wide reciever Luke Pettaway caught 6 passes and scored a touchdown in a 40-21 win over Homewood-Flossmoor last week. The Panthers won this matchup 36-31 last year.

Record setter: Prospect quarterback Brad Vierneisel has a tough act to follow when the Knights host Barrington on Friday. Vierneisel was 15-of-21 passing for a school-record 452 yards and 6 touchdowns in Prospect's season-opening win over Sandburg.

More records fall: Wheeling set a school record with its 57 points in last week's win over Round Lake. Wildcats running back Simon Micula scored a record 5 touchdowns.

Upstate Eight showdown: Glenbard East coach John Walters called it a "heavyweight matchup." His Rams travel to South Elgin to play the three-time defending conference champion Storm. Glenbard East shared the 2019 title with the Storm. Both teams opened the season last week with shutout wins.

Happy 500th: Hersey opened its 2022 campaign with the 500th game in school history. The Huskies made it a memorable one, blanking New Trier 31-0.

Hersey, which began playing football in 1968, is now 260-239-1. One of those victories came in 1988 when the Huskies won the Class 6A state title, beating East St. Louis 26-6. That win came under legendary head coach Bruce Glover, who won 78 games.

Last Friday, it was new Hersey coach Tom Nelson's first career victory. Nelson and the Huskies will go for their second win Friday when they host Fremd.
