Week 7 review: Fremd rallies to pick up first win of season

Fremd rallied and then hung on for its first win by beating Conant 21-20 Friday in Palatine.

Fremd (1-6, 1-3) took a 7-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Spedale to Brennan Saxe. Conant (4-3, 0-3) scored the next 20 points on 5-yard touchdown run by Dominic Mininni, a 34-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Maize to Josh Barnett and a Maize one-yard touchdown run to lead 20-7 with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Fremd came back on a 55-yard touchdown run by Brasyn Turner, an 18-yard touchdown run by Caidan Suchy and a pair of conversion kicks by Ja Martinez to lead 21-20 late in the third quarter.

The Vikings were able to prevail thanks to a pair of interceptions by Saxe, who would finish with three interceptions for the evening. Saxe picked off a pass early in the fourth quarter and then snagged another errant throw with under a minute to play to preserve the victory.

Antioch 37, Grant 9: Nick Day rushed for 3 second-half touchdowns as Antioch (4-3, 4-1) pulled away. Grant (2-5, 1-4) led 9-7 until an Antioch field goal late in the first half put the Sequoits up for good. Day came up with a trio of touchdown runs to keep Antioch in the Northern Lake County race.

Grayslake Central 65, Round Lake 8: Grayslake Central (5-2, 3-2) scored 28 points in the opening quarter to breeze past Round Lake (1-6, 1-4). Cole Gillette threw 3 touchdown passes. The Rams also scored on a 21-yard interception return by Matthew Jens, a 58-yard punt return by Kaiden Miller and an 82-yard kickoff return.

Grayslake North 56, North Chicago 14: Michael Jefferson returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and Grayslake North (6-1, 4-1) never looked back as the Knights clinched a playoff spot. Jefferson also had a 13-yard touchdown run. Jacob Donohue threw touchdown passes to Zion Hodges and DeAndre Neely. Dominique Pulliam scored a pair of touchdowns on a fumble return and a 29-yard run while Chris Pritchard had a 5-yard scoring run.

Hersey 49, Wheeling 0: Hersey (7-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten and stayed atop the MSL East. Colton Gumino had a 5-yard touchdown run and added a 50-yard touchdown pass to Logan Farrell and a 60-yard touchdown pass to Carson Grove. Farrell had a 5-yard touchdown run, Grove had a 56-yard punt return and Johnny Ryg had a 65-yard interception return as the Huskies built a 42-0 halftime lead. Farrell had a 12-yard touchdown pass to Grant Kalata to close out the scoring. Wheeling fell to 3-4, 0-3.

Highland Park 46, Maine East 7: Maine East fell to 1-6, 0-3 as Highland Park (4-3, 2-1) won big in Park Ridge.

Lake Zurich 14, Lake Forest 6: Ashton Gondeck and Lake Zurich (6-1, 5-0) went long to stay atop the North Suburban. Gondeck fired an 80-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Gondeck then threw a 63-yarder in the third quarter as the Bears held off the Scouts (2-5, 2-3)

Lyons 48, Leyden 7: Lyons (6-1) jumped out to a 41-0 lead to win the nonconference matchup. Ethan Corral threw a touchdown pass for Leyden (1-6),

Maine South 45, Niles West 7: Maine South (5-2, 3-0) ran out to a 31-0 lead and cruised to the victory. Jack DeFillippis threw a pair of touchdown passes. One went to Maurice Densmore for 37 yards and the other was a 6-yard pass to Anthony Capesius. Andres Pinto had a 3-yard touchdown run for the Hawks. Wilson Cook had a 27-yard return for a touchdown after Emmett Wolf blocked a punt and Ethan Stumpf kicked a 25-yard field goal to build the lead. Constantine Coines threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Liam Dillon. Coines also had a 4-yard rushing touchdown to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Stevenson 34, Zion-Benton 0: Stevenson (4-3, 3-2) kept their playoff hopes alive by rolling over the Zee Bees

St. Ignatius 50, St. Viator 20: St. Ignatius (5-2) pulled away from St. Viator (4-3) in the second half. Cooper Kmet was 22-of-36 for 265 yards and a touchdown for the Lions. Michael Nix had 7 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown. Jake VanBooven had a touchdown run while Nicky Pastore had eight catches for 55 yards.

Warren 47, Waukegan 0: Warren (6-1, 4-1) had an easy time in Gurnee and the Blue Devils clinched a playoff spot for the 5th playoff season in a row and 20th playoff season in the last 23.

Vernon Hills 42, Niles North 0: Nolan Lazor (9-of-12, 129 yards) threw a pair of touchdown passes to Shep Ratnow and Anthony Martorano had two others as Vernon Hills (1-6, 1-2) picked up its first win of the season in a big way. Lazor threw touchdown passes to Ratnow that covered 42 yards and 17 yards. Mortorano (15 carries, 152 yards) had touchdown runs of 23 and 25 yards. Erik Boehmer threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Forster.
