Prospect’s Homecoming fans waited out a rain and lightning delay in Mount Prospect and then were treated to a thunderous offensive explosion by their football team on Friday night. With its entire side of bleachers packed to capacity, Prospect put on one of its all-time greatest performances in a half scoring all of the game’s points in the first 24 minutes in a 50-0 triumph over Maine West before a hyped-up crowd at George Gattas Stadium.

Sophomore quarterbacks start varsity football games because head coaches believe they have the talent to do so. St. Francis head coach Bob McMillen has the right player in sophomore Alessio Milivojevic. “His game today was like night and day from his first two,” said McMillen. “The coaches this week worked with him on getting the ball out of his hands quicker.” The worked paid off. The visiting Spartans, a Class 4A team. came away with an impressive 34-27 win at Prospect in a nonconference tilt Friday night.

Ben Choi, a star in the Cougars’ thorough 41-6 victory over visiting Elk Grove on Friday, wasn’t even on the varsity team yet. But he thinks he knows exactly why Vernon Hills hasn’t lost a regular-season game since Week 8 of the 2019 season.

Wheeling has no answer for Glenbrook North

It was a great first half of football for host Glenbrook North when the Spartans met Wheeling in nonconference action Friday night. With senior quarterback Murphy Mulvihill leading the way, Glenbrook North stormed to a 27-0 lead after one quarter before a miraculous 96-yard touchdown pass by Mulvihill with just four seconds left in the second quarter gave the Spartans a commanding 41-0 halftime lead. From there, Glenbrook North (2-1) rolled to a 48-9 victory while the Wildcats’ record fell to 1-2 in the early stages of the 2021 season.

St. Edward’s scheduled home game against St. Francis on Friday night has been cancelled due to a positive COVID case within the St. Edward program, Green Wave athletic director P.J. White confirmed Thursday afternoon.

Hoffman Estates used a high-scoring first half and then a stubborn second-half defense to hold off host Rolling Meadows Friday night. The Hawks turned away the Mustangs twice in the fourth quarter to hold on for a narrow 34-32 win in the Mid-Suburban League crossover football game.
